About I AM (501c3)

National non-profit organization I AM THAT GIRL was founded in 2008 by Alexis Jones and (co-founder) Emily Greener to address the growing need for community for girls and young women by helping to build self-esteem and realize their full potential. Recognizing the potential dangers of living in a digital age, consumption and media definitions of what is beautiful, the organization has an interactive platform with content designed to inspire and encourage. The local and digital community, premium, curated and user generated content, and targeted education-based programs all address the emotional, mental and physical well-being of girls. The organization helps girls and young women throughout the country to create support and community through the establishment of local chapters who meet regularly to discuss and share feelings about relevant and pressing topics uch as bullying, current events, eating disorders among others. I AM THAT GIRL provides the curriculum to help guide discussion and provide ideas for calls to action.

MUSIC MONDAYS: CHVRCHES

ItaIn our digital age, it’s not uncommon for an up-and-coming band to generate a lot of online buzz. What makes Scottish electro-pop group CHVRCHES unique, though, is the fact that the trio received that buzz even before a debut EP was complete. After releasing just two tracks, “Lies” and “The Mother We Share,” the band was already opening for Passion Pit and came in fifth in the BBC’s Sound of 2013 poll. Pretty good for a group that only formed in 2011. In March, CHVRCHES put out their long-awaited debut EP, Recover, which included the track, “Now Is Not The Time.” The video for the electronic and pop medley features the band members performing at a roller skating rink. There’s just something so straightforward and simultaneously other-worldly about the lead singer’s ethereal vocals juxtaposed with the colorful lights and the roller skaters weaving in and out of the background. CHVRCHES came together by happenstance, since all three members were already involved in other bands. Lead singer Lauren Mayberry holds a law degree along with a master’s degree in journalism and performed with the band Blue Sky Archives.

      • Sophia Bush
      • “... and that's what this book is all about. Starting a movement with friends and strangers alike. Alexis is setting a tone for us. She is reminding us that we can lay down the armor we wear, and embrace rather than battle. We can each be THAT GIRL. The awesome one who lends an ear or a hand in times of need. The one who is so inspiring that she makes us want to be better. The one who is so vulnerable and honest about her feelings, that she motivates us to look inward at who we really are, what we really want, and what we are afraid of. We ARE each that girl, if only we allow ourselves to be."
